I am always intrigued at how cool the Golden Globes chooses its nominees! The fourth nominee is Chris Cornell from Soundgarden and he has this fantastic song from the movie Machine Gun Preacher. I think this is also his first Golden Globe nomination. It is also vintage Chris!
Whew, I haven't heard any Sinead O'Connor song for almost 15 years now, so I was really happy to hear that she sang the theme song for the Albert Nobbs - and it got a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song! Hurrah! This was written by Glenn Close and music by Brian Byrne. The song is vintage Sinead, mind you - and she sounds just as good as she did 22 years ago!
Mary J. Blige did a song for a movie a long time ago, I think it was Not Gon' Cry - I even forgot now for which movie it was. But anyway, this song, The Living Proof from the movie The Help is solid and is perfect for the movie. And yeah, it's vintage Mary! I think, it's also her first Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song.
I'm happy that Madonna got a nomination for her movie W.E. I don't think that movie will ever reach the Philippines, but anyway, at least, for Madonna fans like me, we have a new song of hers to feast on. I haven't warmed up to it much yet though.
Trent Reznor, not normally a musical scorer for films, wins this award, along with Atticus Ross - and I correctly picked it too! Well, their work really does sound original for the movie The Social Network, and it's one of the reasons why the movie has some memorable scenes. I was lucky to have seen Trent perform here in Manila last year when his group, the Nine Inch Nails!
It's about time Dianne Warren gets a Golden Globe - and she does it today, for having written "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me Yet", a song sung by Cher in the movie Burlesque. This was actually my personal pick too, to get a win. It's actually vintage Dianne Warren - the sound, the title length, the mood of the song - it's great that she's back doing what she has done well four times before - write a song for a movie!
My vote for Best Original Score goes to Hans Zimmer for his work here in Inception. It's difficult to dissociate the movie from the music. The scenes of dreams within dreams works because of the intense music that accompanies it, and there's always a sense of dread for us watching that those characters in those dreams might not wake from it - and instead, be trapped in that limbo somewhere there. I'm not sure if I'm making sense, but the music of this movie, surely does!
Yup, you read it right! That's Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails, the guy I saw perform here in Manila about 2 years ago! This soundtrack is a very intriguing one, since it's rare to hear electronic-like music in the usual movie soundtracks that you hear, so Reznor and Ross' work here is quite impressive and pretty original.
A.R. Rahman knows this territory very well, winning this award two years ago for Slumdog Millionaire. This year, he returns with another haunting soundtrack, working with the same director, on a movie with a different theme - 127 Hours.
Danny Elfman is also one of those most sought after musical scorers, and this year, he gets a nod for the hit Tim Burton movie, Alice in Wonderland. This is his third nomination in this category. He was nominated in 1993 for A Nightmare Before Christmas, and in 2003 for Big Fish.
Alexandre Desplat is no stranger to the Golden Globes. He won this award in 2007 for the Painted Veil. This is his fourth nomination. His two other nominations came from Syriana in 2006 and Girl With A Pearl Earring in 2004.
Well, I'm a huge Cher fan, so I'm eagerly awaiting the release of her movie with Christina Aguilera, here in the Philippines. One of the two songs she sings in the movie is nominated for a Golden Globe and the credit goes to Dianne Warren who did the music and lyrics for this song - You Haven't Seen the Last of Me. Dianne is no stranger to this category - getting nominations for Aerosmith's I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing, Faith Hill's There You'll Be and Celine Dion's Because You Loved Me.
This would be my pick for the winner since I love both the songwriter and the interpreter of the song. In a way, it's a sentimental vote since none of the other nominees are standouts anyway. Of course, it would've been better if I could see all the nominees and how the songs were used in the movie - but for now - I just have to base it on what I hear.
It's great to see American Idol winner, Carrie Underwood, tackle songwriting duties for a movie, this time for the Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, for the song 'There's A Place for Us'. Music and lyrics for this song by Hillary Lindsey, Carrie Underwood and David Hodges.
This song sounds very much like a vintage Carrie Underwood song and this time, she uses orchestral instrumentation in the background, fit for a grand movie like this one.
I think this is Christina Aguilera's first movie and unsurprisingly, it's a musical. One of the song's from that musical - Bound To You, was nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for Best Original Motion Picture Song. The music of this wong was by Samuel Dixon and the lyrics by Christina Aguilera and Sia Furler. This is vintage Christina and it's great to hear her sing again in the vocal range she is famous for.
