Hans Zimmer won the Oscar for this category in 1994, for The Lion King. This nomination for Inception is his ninth nomination all in all. The score was an important element in Inception as it helped to magnify the spectacular action happening onscreen, from buildings collapsing, to dreams collapsing within dreams, to waking them up so they don't go to limbo. Zimmer made sure the music had its heightened drama to highlight the action happening in the movie.
This song is entitled The Dream Is Collapsing, and I think it's the part where Marion Cotillard's character goes into limbo.
