My Five Favorite Songs from Jason Derulo's Future History

When Jason Derulo visited Manila a few years back, I was there in that mall tour!  He has always been one of the more innovative and prolific songwriters of his generation so I was a bit excited to hear what he had in store for us in his second album.  It is a very melodic album and like his first album, Jason uses samples of famous songs in some of the material here and you can see that he instinctively uses the music to shore up his own ideas instead of just blatantly copying the melody of the sampled song.  Incidentally, I do not like his first single, Don't Wanna Go Home, although it did hit #1 in the UK.

Here are my five favorite songs from his Future History album -

1.  It Girl - This is my most favorite song from his album.  It reached #17 in the US and #4 in the UK. It also reached the Top 10 in Australia, Ireland and New Zealand.

2.  Make It Up As We Go - If I were in his record album, this would've been my choice for his second single.  He sounds like a real hip hop artist here!  However, this was never released as a single.

3.  Breathing - Another great dance song from Jason where he incorporates a little bit of Latin flava.  The song has reached the Top 10 in Australia, Canada and Switzerland.

4.  Pick Up the Pieces - This song was never released as a single, although I feel it had the potential.  It's my top ballad pick for this album.  I love the chorus and how Jason sings it!  "I miss you I mean it!"

5.  Fight For You -  This song samples the Toto hit, Africa, which Jason uses quite cleverly here!  This was the fourth Top 10 hit he had in Australia - all from this specific album.

Download of the Week: Jason Derulo's 'It Girl'

I like Jason Derulo's new song 'It Girl'. It shows that his earlier hits were not flukes and that there's more good songwriting to come from him. I love the whistling bit in this song. I'm not surprised it has reached the Top 5 of the UK charts. The US should follow soon enough.

Jason Derulo's 'It Girl' His Fifth UK Top 10 Hit

Jason Derulo gets his fifth UK Top 10 with It Girl.  The song has peaked at #4 and this week it slips to #8.  It's his fifth Top 10 hit in the UK.  Below are his other Top 10 hits in the UK -

2009 - Whatcha Say (#3)
2009 - In My Head (#1)
2010 - Ridin' Solo (#2)
2011 - Don't Wanna Go Home (#1)
2011 - It Girl (#4)

A Samples Favorite: Harry Belafonte's Banana Boat Song

Mama loved Harry Belafonte, and as a kid, I would always hear his music being played in our cassette tape (oh, those were the days!). This was the song that stood out from the rest, his classic Banana Boat Song.

I also remember this song since Tim Burton included it in a very funny yet classic scene in his movie Beetlejuice! That scene really made me go to the cinema and I just waited for it!

Nowadays, you can hear Harry's trademark "Day-O" in Jason Derulo's UK #1 hit, Don't Wanna Go Home. Jason decided to update this classic and reintroduce it to today's generation.

A Sampler's Favorite - The Original Robin S Classic 'Show Me Love'

I was still in college when this song became a huge hit in the US, and also in the dance floor here in the Philippines. I didn't realize that this would become a big classic for today's generation of performers - the latest being Jason Derulo, who samples it heavily in his UK #1 hit, Don't Wanna Go Home.

We also get to dance this always in our Body Jam classes so I think the Les Mills people really love this track - the way I love it too!
