Concert Review: John Ford Coley's Show Brought Back Warm, Nostalgic Memories of My Childhood

Thanks to my friend Tyang, Mama and I were able to watch John Ford Coley's 40th Year Anniversary Concert here in Manila. John is one-half of the popular 70s duo of England Dan and John Ford Coley.

I was around 8 years old when they released their Greatest Hits album which my older sisters constantly played in the cassette player. This was years before we bought our first Madonna album.

In fact, it was one of the earliest albums I heard in my young life, right before I formed my own musical taste. That's why these songs have such a nostalgic ring to it everytime I hear it.

They bring me back to my chilhood years living in the boondocks of Cebu.

The 70s really had that easygoing, folk-rock sound, and the songs had meaningful lyrics in them.

John Ford Coley played most of their hits during the show including several famous songs of the 70s era. I do not know the titles of most of the songs but they sound pretty familiar to me.

It was a very relaxed show as Coley confidently told stories about the songs they've written and how he has come to love the Philippines. He said he has been here 30 times already and he can speak a smattering of Tagalog like "Bakit ka tumatawa?" or "Isa pa". Amazing!

Concert Review: Martin Nievera Sings All His Hits in His 33 Year Career

Because during my time the media played up the rivalry between Gary Valenciano and Marin Nievera, subliminally, Gary fans like me, tended to avoid watching and supporting Martin's gigs - which on hindsight - was really childish and stupid. But that's just how it is. It's happening right now with the JaDine's and the KathNiel fans. New generation, new stars, same stupid marketing ploy.

Why don't we just support all OPM artists? They're all great anyway!

And Martin sounded divine last night! He has really protected and preserved his voice even though I know he's older than me! To sound and look like that when you're in your 50s is quite an achievement!

This show was perfect for me because he only sang a few songs which were not his. In other words, it was a Martin Nievera greatest hits concert and I felt lucky I was part of it, because sa first four songs palang niya, a deluge of high school memories agad ang nangyari, as each of the songs played very crucial parts from when I was in Grade 7 to 4th year high school.

His guests were just as fantastic, and it included his son Robin, whom I've seen perform live na rin before, and KZ as well. Sana KZ would do what she did in this show in her own concert. I found her show before a bit stiff and staid when she's really a free-flowing performer kind of girl! She really gained a lot of new fans last night, especially from my age group.

Morissette is another revelation to me as well. This girl just needs one great song and she'll reach a lot of new fans! Make an album please.

I was really amazed at Martin's pipes since he sang for well over 2 hours and many of the songs were difficult!! There were many standards and Broadway songs as well. And he showed his versatility by singing the hit du jour, Shut Up and Dance.

He truly deserved the standing ovation he got in the end! One of the few local performers who can give foreign acts a run for their money!

My Weekly Top 10 December 13, 2013: #6 Naked Eyes - Piccadilly

Piccadilly was probably the only new song the band, Naked Eyes, played last night, during their show here in Manila at the Solaire Casino and Resort Hotel.   I think it's a good song, I like it!  This week, the song moves from #8 to #6.

My Weekly Top 10 December 6, 2013: #5 Naked Eyes - Emotion in Motion

Emotion in Motion was Naked Eyes' third #1 hit in my personal countdown.  The song peaked at the top in 1983.  This week, the song reenters at #5.  It was my most favorite song that they performed during their concert here in Manila at the Solaire Casino and Resort Hotel.

My Weekly Top 10 December 6, 2013: #6 Naked Eyes - Promises, Promises

Promises, Promises was a #1 hit for the British duo Naked Eyes in 1983.  It was one of their three #1 hits.  The song reenters my personal countdown this week at #6.  The band performed this song during their concert here in Manila at the Solaire Casino and Resort Hotel.

My Weekly Top 40 December 6, 2013: #7 Naked Eyes - Fortune and Fame

Fortune and Fame peaked at #3 in my personal countdown in 1983. This week, the song reenters at #7.  It's their band's fifth top 10 hit in my personal countdown. The band performed this song during their concert here in Manila at the Solaire Casino and Resort Hotel.

I Could Show You How peaked at #3 in 1983 - a second top 10 hit for the British duo Naked Eyes.  This week, it reenters at #9.  The band performed this song during their show at the Solaire Casino and Resort Hotel here in Manila.

My Weekly Top 10 December 6, 2013: #10 Naked Eyes - Voices in My Head

80s band Naked Eyes reenter my personal countdown this week with several songs, as they did a great set here in Manila, at the Solaire Casino and Resort Hotel yesterday.  Reentering at #10 is Voices in My Head, a #3 hit for the band way back in 1983.
