David Singer Vine of The Cataracs

I was checking the labels of this blog tonight and I came across the name of David Singer Vine, whom I've never written about before.  I then found out that he's one-half of the recording duo, The Cataracs, whose only claim to fame right now was working on that #1 hit Like A G6 with Dev and that band whose name escapes me right now.  He's cute!  And the inquiry for his name came from Romania!  The world of music has gone really smaller now with the internet!

Dev Finally Gets Her First UK #1 Hit

Dev, also known as Devin Star Tailes, was first featured in Far East Movement's hit Like A G6, which hit #5 in the UK.  She followed it up with her own hit, Bass Down Low, which hit #10.  She finally made it to the top of the UK charts, with JLS, in their hit, She Makes Me Wanna.  She now has three Top 10 hits in the UK to date.

JLS Returns to UK #1 Spot with She Makes Me Wanna

In a span of three years, British boy band, JLS, score their seventh UK #1 hit, with She Makes Me Wanna, their collaboration with Dev.  As JLS, their other #1 hits were Beat Again, Everybody In Love, The Club Is Alive, and Love You More.

They also had #1's as featured artists in the song Hero with The X-Factor Finalists, and in Everybody Hurts, as part of Helping Haiti.

Chart Performance: Far East Movement

Far East Movement gets their third top 10 hit and first #1 song in the UK, as Get Up (Rattle), debuts at #1.   They collaborated with Dutch DJs Bingo Players, on this track.

They are a rapping, songwriting, and music event producing group formed in 2003 in Los Angeles, California, consisting of Kev Nish, Prohgress, J-Splif, and DJ Virman.

The Cataracs are also credited in this song.  They also score their first US #1 hit.  They are an American Indie-Pop duo formed in Berkeley, California consisting of David “Campa” Benjamin Singer-Vine, a songwriter and vocalist and Niles “Cyrano” Hollowell-Dhar, a songwriter, vocalist, and producer. The duo started out as an independent group, during their years at Berkeley High School.

Finally, the last credit for this song is Dev, who also scores her first US #1 hit.  She's the voice that you hear in the beginning of the song since it comes from her song 'Booty Bounce', which is sampled in this song.

I've always wondered what G6 means and many consider the name to refer to the Gulfstream G650, a twin-engine aircraft under development by Gulfstream Aerospace, or also to the Pontiac G6, a car made by Pontiac. Interestingly, in the song there is a reference to an alcoholic drink Sizzurp. Its main ingredient is prescription-strength cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine.  I like this song.  It kinda grows on you and I'm happy this collaboration worked well for everyone.  It's like hiphop meets electronic music.

I Feel Like A G6 Today!

Trust the hiphop world to come up with absolutely cool phrases!  The popularity of Far East Movement's 'Like A G6' got everyone thinking, what exactly were these guys talking about?  Turns out G6 refers to the Gulfstream G650 8-passenger jet, also known as a G6 in rap circles.  It has trumped the luxury vehicle to become hip hop's new ultimate status symbol.  G6 is used as a metaphor for feeling fly, urban slang for exceptionally good.

"A G6 is not a Gatorade flavor. It's not a car, convertible, four-door. It's not a watch," group member Kev Nish told MTV News. "But Drake, Drake talks about having G4 pilots on deck, so we said, 'What's flyer than a G4?' Of course, it would be a G6."

Nish also explained to the Associated Press: "It means we wanted y'all to experience a night with us. We hit the clubs, three clubs in one night. We feel fly. It's just about 'feeling fly,' feeling yourself. Living that night like it's your last."
