Remembering Katy Perry's 2009 and 2012 Shows in Manila

I have missed many live shows lately. Pano, tinatamad na ang matanda makipagsiksikan and makipagsigawan with the young people.

Anyway, these are throwback pictures of the first two Katy Perry concerts I watched in 2009 and 2012. Every three years pala ang punta ng lola mo dito sa Pinas.

I watched it with different groups of friends pala and I'll be watching it with Laura later! I still have short hair, but this time, sa Philippine Arena na sa Bulacan.

OMG! Let's see how layo it is from our house!

'The One That Got Away' Shirt

I was already dressed all in black last night when Laura looks at me and says, "Papa C, you can't go out looking like that! It's a Katy Perry concert, you have to wear colorful clothes!"

So she commandeered me back to my room, and like an experienced stylist, rummaged through my locker and took out this ensemble! She even changed my shoes, sabi niya, "That's ugly!" and picked my gold Hugo Boss shoes!

Unknown to Laura, this shirt was the favorite shirt of my ex huhu! This was the couple's shirt I made for the both of us - and what timing naman to wear it in a concert where the singer will sing a song entitled, "The One That Got Away"!

Hayy naku! It's funny how things align in some weird, cosmic way!

By the way, Katy did a beautiful acoustic mash-up of The One That Got Away and Thinking of You! And my section sang heartily with her - definitely one of the best moments last night - and there were so many!!

Concert Review: Katy Perry's Prismatic World Tour 2015

Fun is the operative word that comes to my mind while watching a Katy Perry concert. While other female artists are either too lazy to mount an interesting show (Rihanna), or take themselves too seriously (Lady Gaga), Katy just does what an entertainer should really do - which is to make her fans sing and dance along with her!

It's my third time already to see Katy live and her show is already so sleek that even the management of Superbowl has seen it fit to let her do theirhalf-time show! That's how good she is na! Among the pop stars, her voice has sounded good live and though she switches octaves if she needs to, di naman obvious kasi her songs naman are not power ballads.

I really had fun last night, same as my first two previous experiences. Her music has certainly evolved already as the songs are professionally produced na talaga. Di na pacute cute. While Prism does not have the megahits like California Gurls or Last Friday Night, it still had some buoyant songs from it which Katy performed really well!

Let's see if she comes back in 2018 and hopefully, after promoting another interesting and successful album!

Katy Perry Champions the Unique

In her songs, Katy Perry has championed the unpopular ones - the misfits, the outsiders, the freaks, the unglamorous ones - so it was just fitting last night that the person she picked from the audience was a guy who came to the concert, in what looked to me as a 'gown' costume. Nag-effort talaga lola mo!

The guy looked really dazed in the first few seconds he was onstage, but who wouldn't? One minute, you're just an audience member, next time you know, Katy Perry is calling you to join her onstage! How cool is that!

They had this short repartee on teaching Katy some Tagalog words (my seatmate said, "Mali, Filipino"!) Gusto ko sabihin, Dear, to the rest of us who speak Tagalog as a second language, Filipino is Tagalog and don't you kid us.

Anyway, funny thing is when Katy asked him "How do you say hello in Tagalog?" he says, "Hello!" to which Katy remarks "So I flew a few thousand miles here to learn Tagalog and hello is hello?!" O nga naman, how else do you say hello in Tagalog?

Then she asks him, "How do you say thank you?" and the boy says "Salamat!" which Katy quickly associates with salami, so that she won't forget. Yun lang, she fumbles on it twice, I forget what she said exactly, but as she finished her song for this segment of the show, I think someone cued her properly and she said Salamat perfectly!

The lucky guy, whose name was Marty (or was it Martin?), was amply rewarded with hugs and selfies - much to the envy of everyone else!

Technology has really made today's live shows more interesting and spontaneous!

Katy Perry Prismatic World Tour 2015: Katy's Homage to 90s Music

I was mortified last night to realize how old I am na talaga! When Katy Perry segued Madonna's classic "Vogue" into her song, International Smile, I was the only one who danced to it - in my section of the audience.

To make matters worse, when her DJ played an all early 90s dance hit list which included a lot of dance classics from C&C Music Factory, Robin S, Technotronic, Marky Mark (that's Mark Walhberg for you today's young people, yes, he has a #1 dance hit in the early 90s) and the Funky Bunch among others, I was the only one - again - to dance in my section - huhuhu - NR ang mga batang katabi ko!

Laura even said to me when they played Cece Peniston's Finally, "Papa C, that song comes from an advertisement!" "Of what? I retorted back!"

O nga naman, these kids were born in the mid-90's! They wouldn't know how cool dance music was in the early 90s with the baggy pants and the attitude and the flailing arms!

That intro actually segued perfectly with Katy's next song - Walking on Air - which really sounds like an early 90s song to me. A homage to dance music during those days!

Katy Perry Prismatic World Tour 2015 in Manila: Love the Souvenir and Merchandise Items!

I've always been a sucker for concert merchandise! I realized now that almost half of my t-shirts are concert t-shirts! I haven't really bought a shirt that was not from a concert in more than 10 years!

Anyway, Katy did not sing "Birthday" which was one of the most-awaited parts of her world tour. I don't really know the real details to it but my friend said, the Philippine Arena ceiling was just too high, and might have frightened Katy to fly from so high!

That picture on top, with her on the balloons was supposed to be how it looked as she sang Birthday! Kainis! Oh well, Youtube na lang! Mas maganda sana kung live!

Katy Perry Prismatic World Tour 2015 in Manila

Ang gulo-gulo sa lobby after the show - pero nag-groupie pa rin! Nasama si kuya sa picture.

Di ko masyado napansin kung maraming cute na boys. Kasi naman, Katy Perry concert eto! Kung may boys dito, malamang, di sya boy, or father of the daughters watching the show.

Sabi naman ni gurl, baka naman boyfriends nila yun. So gagastos ka ng tumataginting na ten thousand pesoses para samahan ang girlfriend mo sa concert. O sya, di ba pwedeng sila na lang ng barkada niya magsama?

In fairness, andun naman ang KathNiel. Baka naupo lang si Daniel sa whole show, tulad ng boylet na katabi ko, kahit California Gurls na at nagbobooty call na ang mga dancers ni Katy, di pa rin tumayo, nakaupo sya the whole show!

Sana kumuha na lang ng aso girlfriend niya, nagjowa pa sya.
