Concert Review: Relishing the Feel Good Music of 'Train'

I almost caught the mini-concert Train had in Alabang earlier this year but since going to Alabang is like going to another planet, I decided against going - and also - I was arriving from HK midnight of the day of that show, it was impossible to be in Alabang at 9 in the morning just to queue for the tickets.

So, when I learned a few months back that the band was actually having a live stadium show this month, I immediately scored myself some tickets!

Well, just like the Pitbull show, I also found the Train concert a tad too short, but nevertheless, we had a good time since they practically performed all their good songs from their first two albums including Calling All Angels, If It's Love and Save Me San Francisco.

Their lead singer, Patrick Monahan has a fantastic voice which is like an octave higher than a normal guy's voice!  He asked some audience members to sing with him on the Journey hit, Don't Stop Believin' and he had a bit of a hard time looking for a volunteer.  Of course, dude, you'd have to have Arnel Pineda's voice to hit such high notes - that's a Journey song after all - and their songs also start at the same high key as most of Train's songs because of Steve Perry's exceptional voice!

Patrick was very generous tonight and everyone in the pit was getting a lot of free stuff like Train shirts and even a guitar!  One of the girls got the guitar after she had to sashay and shimmy and sing, along with a host of other girls Patrick picked from the audience.

Well, the crowd favorites were still Marry Me, Hey Soul Sister and Drops of Jupiter - which, along with Words, were their encore songs.  I was actually in an emotional state when he sang 'Jupiter' since that song means a lot to me - and I had tears in my eyes just listening to it - when suddenly, they put the lights on towards the audience at the 'na na na' part of the song - I suddenly had to recoil my teary eyes!  Dyahe!  Oh well, they immediately turned off the lights after a few seconds so buti na lang.

Well, to those who missed tonight's show, be ready for their return since Patrick was really amazed with the audience reaction tonight and said that they'd be back soon as their new album is released next month.  He even went further and said that in all the 35 countries that they'd been to, the Manila audience was the bomb!  Oh well, we're getting to hear that always right now from most of the acts that come here.
