FABE OPM Top 10 April 18, 2014: #5 Sam Concepcion - Kontrabida

Kontrabida is one of the songs that Sam Concepcion performed during his No Limitations concert a few weeks ago.  I did not notice the song while I was playing his album but it was when he performed it during the concert, did it make a dent in my OPM top 10.  It moves this week from #6 to #5, his fourth top 10 hit in the FABE OPM countdown.

It's been pretty rare for an OPM song to spend two weeks at #1.  Last year, it only happened twice.  This year, Ney Dimaculangan's Kung Di Man is the first one to do it.  This week, the song stays at #1 for a second week, the first OPM song to do that this year.

Another 2013 Philpop Song Tops My OPM Countdown This Week

Ever since I bought the Philpop 2013 album a few weeks ago, and gave it a spin, a host of songs from those finalists have tumbled into my OPM top 10 countdown.  Last year, Sam Concepcion's Dati topped my OPM countdown and was one of the biggest OPM songs of 2013.

This week, Ney Dimaculangan's Kung Di Man, becomes the second song from that competition to top my OPM countdown.  And more songs are on its heels!  So I'm really excited to hear the finalists of this year's Philpop competition!  Bravo Pinoy songwriters! Mabuhay kayo and sana radio plays your songs!

A Standards Song Tops My OPM Countdown This Week

I love standards but it's been pretty rare for an OPM artist to top my OPM countdown with one, unlike in my foreign charts where Barbra Streisand, Jamie Cullum and Michael Buble have been regular chart toppers.

Anyway, that spell has been broken this week, as the local The Voice finalist, Paolo Onesa, tops my OPM countdown with Lucky in Love, a song from his debut album, Pop Goes Standards.  It's one of the albums that I will have to buy soon as I listen to the album I bought last week!

Here are my ten favorite OPM songs for the week ending March 21, 2014 -

#1 Paolo Onesa - Lucky in Love (#2)

#2 Ney Dimaculangan - Kung Di Ba (#5)

More of Sam and a Bit of KZ!

KZ and Sam did their own version of A Great Big World's Say Something last night - and it was a great interpretation, hewed very closely to the original!

Concert Pictures: Sam Concepcion's No Limitations

I was happy that my camera was cooperating last night.  I actually liked the pictures I took during Sam's show last night.  It was also hard to take pictures because I liked most of the songs he sang so I was always deciding whether to just enjoy the show or take more pictures or videos!

Concert Review: Enjoyed the Show of the Super Talented Sam Concepcion

I was really impressed with how Sam Concepcion performed last night at his concert at the Music Museum! Yes, he can sing, but he's also very articulate in his spiels and he can dance! He seemed very relaxed with his dance moves so I'm really surprised why most people just think he only sings (well, I think I was the only one who thinks he can't dance).

I like the pacing of the show, and it was great that during the first half of the show, Sam sang most of the songs in his latest album, something I think that OPM acts should do, instead of singing other famous foreign songs. Before the concert, I was really apprehensive that, like other local acts, the show would just be a glorified karaoke night, for a singer with a good voice, singing today's latest hits.

Well, Sam did sing some of today's hits, but it was just a host of Chris Brown songs (his last set), and my favorites, John Legend's All of Me, and A Great Big World's Say Something. At least, since di pa masyado gasgas ang mga songs na eto, he performed them na. I also enjoyed the Michael Jackson set, the Eraserheads set, I even loved how he sang Coldplay's Yellow! I was pissed nga kasi I only have a 2GB memory card in my camera. Ano ba yan? Kung kelan maraming magandang ivideo na songs, wala naman akong memory space!

Sam is very lucky to have this group of fans called the Samsters who really supported his show! He actually came out after the show, sat at a table and gamely autographed merchandise, even if he did look a bit tired. Even then, he had a ready smile for everyone who wanted a photo op like me! Well, sa totoo lang, without these fans, wala rin silang career, so for him to openly appreciate that, should spread the good word about him.

I really wish for Sam to have more live shows and to have more hit songs. He has so much to offer as a performer - and it would be interesting to chart his journey as an artist.

My Ten Favorite OPM Songs of 2013 (#'s 5-1)

#5 Toni Gonzaga - Kahit Na

I remember reading somewhere that a listener was turned off by this song because Toni sings about her lover as "mukhang paa" - and the listener found it offensive.  I think the song's cute!  Even the video!  It's pretty tongue-in-cheek really!  And it's pretty rare to have a bouncy OPM song so I remember that the first time I heard this, I was already dancing to it!

#4 Angeline Quinto - Patuloy ang Pangarap

I think this song was popular way back in 2011 but since it was only this year that I got hold of her CD, I count this song for this year.  I really like the way she sings and although she and Regine sound very alike, I think they are also different for many obvious reasons.  As for me, the more singers there are, the merrier for everyone, especially the fans - no matter if they sound similar in one way or another.  Surely, as they mature as artists, they will find their own unique voice!  I love the arrangement of the song - very Regine hahaha!

#3 Chris Cantada - Other Side

I actually saw Chris perform live in one of those bars in Makati.  It was a pity that we were like five in the audience at that time!  Anyway, he and the other guys who performed that night really gave their all.  This is one of the good songs from his album Heartbeat and I won't be surprised if I unearth more good songs from it in 2014.  As a matter of fact, January is still climbing my Top 10 OPM charts this week.

#2 Sam Concepcion, Tippy Dos Santos, Quest - Dati

I wish I could sing along with this song.  I think the pitch they chose is just too high for me so I could never properly sing along to it!  But I love this song and I love how Sam and Tippy blend their voices together.  Remind me to buy Sam's CD because three songs from it have already charted in my OPM countdown and I won't be surprised if I discover some more treasures from it.

#1 Juris - Hanggang Wakas

This year, melancholy trumps fun songs - and it's true for both my OPM and my international countdowns.  Juris' melancholy song about someone awaiting death, is my most favorite OPM song of the year.  I just love how she sings it and the sadness that she brings to the song.  I have been playing it over and over and I haven't gotten bored with it!
