Another 2013 Philpop Song Tops My OPM Countdown This Week

Ever since I bought the Philpop 2013 album a few weeks ago, and gave it a spin, a host of songs from those finalists have tumbled into my OPM top 10 countdown.  Last year, Sam Concepcion's Dati topped my OPM countdown and was one of the biggest OPM songs of 2013.  

This week, Ney Dimaculangan's Kung Di Man, becomes the second song from that competition to top my OPM countdown.  And more songs are on its heels!  So I'm really excited to hear the finalists of this year's Philpop competition!  Bravo Pinoy songwriters! Mabuhay kayo and sana radio plays your songs!

Kiss Jane's eighth top 10 hit in My OPM Top 10, Kay Sarap, slips down this week to #5.  I read that they released this song last year pa.  Anyway, better late than never!

A Standards Song Tops My OPM Countdown This Week

I love standards but it's been pretty rare for an OPM artist to top my OPM countdown with one, unlike in my foreign charts where Barbra Streisand, Jamie Cullum and Michael Buble have been regular chart toppers.  

Anyway, that spell has been broken this week, as the local The Voice finalist, Paolo Onesa, tops my OPM countdown with Lucky in Love, a song from his debut album, Pop Goes Standards.  It's one of the albums that I will have to buy soon as I listen to the album I bought last week!

Moonstar88 Tops My OPM Countdown for the First Time

I have only learned now that Moonstar88 has been making music since 2001!  That's what I get for not listening to OPM for so long!  I've lost out on so much good music!  Anyway, better late than never, as they say.  Finally, this week, the band gets their very first #1 hit in my OPM countdown as Sembreak goes to #1.

My Favorite OPM Songs of 2011: #15 Letter Day Story and Jacq Dionisio - Isang Umaga

This song, Isang Umaga, by Letter Day Story and Jacq Dionisio of Kiss Jane, is actually just an album track from LDS' Sama-Sama album, but it comes in strong at #15 in my year-end list since I remember that when I first gave LDS' CD a spin, this became one of my "happy" songs of the week. I couldn't just stop listening to it! It just really made me happy! A song filled with optimism to get you through your day!

My Myx Favorite New Artist 2011: Kiss Jane

I really like this band, and they are one of the reasons why I started listening to OPM once again.  The field this year is very strong as the other nominees include Franco, General Luna, Quest and Tanya Markova.

Kahit Na by Kiss Jane - My #2 Favorite OPM Song In 2010

I'm so glad I decided to actively listen to OPM this year, otherwise, I would've missed this wonderful band called Kissjane! This song also grew on me and the more I listened to it, the more I was endeared to it. The perfect, breezy song you can play as you walk along the beach or coast along the highway while driving! I also like the video and even though I'm gay, the lead singer is definitely hot! If I were straight, I'd date her! Their album Free, has also other songs that offer that same breezy vibe, so they're really a welcome addition to OPM this year.

OPM Songs I'm Voting This Week for the OPM Myx Countdown

Every day, I vote seven OPM songs for the OPM Myx Countdown so that they get to a high peak. It certainly helped Aljur Albrenica's Sayang Sayang stay in the Top 10 for a long time in the middle of this year. I have also supported new bands like Letter Day Story, Kiss Jane; veteran bands like Cueshe and Sugarfree and musicians like Miguel Escueta - because I really like their material.

Starting this week, I will tell you which seven songs I've voted for the countdown. This is ranked according to preference.

Don't Lose Hope With OPM Music - There's a Gold Mine Out There!

I am actually sad that local radio stations have to be prodded to play OPM (Original Pilipino Music) songs. Radio stations always lament that OPM is dying, but ever since I decided to actively listen to OPM through the MYX video channel, I realized that there was a wealth of music out there, original music, being created by today's Filipino musicians!  I could actually buy one OPM CD a week since there is so much music to be discovered yet!  I started listening last March 2010 only, and I already have the CDs of Dagtang Lason, a rap group; 6cyclemind, Kiss Jane, XLR8, Letter Day Story, Juris, and Aljur Abrenica.  And that's only scratching the surface!  If I had more budget, I will even buy more!! So OPM is not dead!  We just have to spread the word out there that there's a lot of good music to be discovered!  I really have to thank Myx video channel for opening my musical horizons!

Album Review: Kiss Jane - Free

The first time I heard their hit song 'Kahit Na' in the OPM Myx Countdown, I instantly became their fan!  The song was one of the best OPM pop songs I've heard in a long time and I even voted for the song in the Myx channel so that it'd have a longer chart life!  

I bought the CD a few weeks later, soon as it became available and I find the other songs to be quite consistent with their first single.  Breezy, light and fun and perfect for long drives - even drives along EDSA - because it kinda lightens your mood amidst the chaotic driving!  

Anyhow, the group has released 'Baliw' afterwards and I still continued to vote for that song till it fell off the Myx OPM Countdown charts.  There are several gems in their album and here are my five favorite songs aside from the two they just released.  They are ranked according to how much I like them with number one as the song I like the most -

1.  Minsan Lang - this is my favorite song from their album, I like the melody and the way she sings it with earnestness and longing

2.  Langit - another impressive tune from their album, a song I could've related to 15 years about being harassed at work and about having things going wrong around you, the imagery of the lyrics is perfect for a video!

3.  Mistakes - a song in their album which I could relate to - no one is really immune from making mistakes in love - and in a way, reminds me of Sheryl Crow's 'My Favorite Mistake', although this song has a more upbeat outlook to it

4.  Bituin - a standout track in their album - a retro song, if I may say, I felt they channeled  ethereal sound of Pinoy 70's disco music popularized by VST & Company, perfect for a video too, with maybe some creative 70's choreography and bell bottoms!

5.  Lagi - definitely one of the cooler songs in their album, a song which could actually describe their whole album - light, breezy and outstanding Pinoy pop

The other tracks that I did not mention are just as good and interesting, those five are just the ones I can relate to melodically and lyrically.

I haven't seen them play live yet so I don't know how compact they play but I'm very curious how they would bring these songs alive. Of course, that would be another review!
