Concert Review: Jason Dy Makes A Breakthrough

The Skydome is not really the best place to hold a live show. I feel that the acoustics of the place is not very good.

It might be that or Jason Dy's sound engineer should've done a thorough sound check during their rehearsals, making sure that each nook and cranny of the venue can hear him ver clearly.

I was in the VIP section and for some reason, I could not hear very clearly what he was saying and sometimes, his voice gets drowned out by the band.

Tuloy, we couldn't react spontaneously to what he was saying, like any other live show audience should.

I'm sure there's a way that the lead performer's microphone should sound stronger than the rest, so that at least we could hear what he's saying and singing.

Thankfully, there were parts of the show that he could be heard so it was not fully an exercise in futility.

But i just hope that all newbie performers do it a la Barbra Streisand style, as the Babs has been known to be very meticulous about making sure she's heard very clearly in her shows, especially that she does a lot of spiels!

It's a pity since his show was well--conceptualized and thought out and Jason really made an effort to showcase his other talents like dancing.

And singing-wise, he was in top form as he was able to reach the high notes of South Border's Kahit Kailan with ease - easily one of the highlights of his show.

It's just that the mic or the sound system could not translate that to great audience reaction - something which I always look forward to in concerts.

His wardrobe though was excellent, really right along my alley and really what a concert wardrobe should be - flashy and glittery!

The band and the back-up singers and dancers were in fine form as well, and there was even a portion where a saxophonist joined Jason on stage.

It was very easy for Jason to please the audience since his Dyfenders and Sarah's Popstars were there to lend their support.
Even my seatmate was so into the show, shouting at just the right moments.

As for me, I like the portions where I know the song, like Prince's Kiss and Justin Timberlake's Can't Stop the Feeling.

I also like when he sang his own song, I Am Something. In fact, he sang some of his own songs in the show, which is rare in OPM shows, where they tend to do other people's songs.

KZ Tandingan and Jay-R, who were his guests were standouts and you can really see that experience counts when doing live shows since they just moved and sang freely - and bantered with the audience with ease.

Anyhow, it's a good start for Jason and hopefully, he releases more new material that he can do in his future live shows. And really, a thorough sound check can make the experience much better for his fans.

Tim Pavino's Stages Session: Hugot Songs and Good Vibes

In penitence for supporting foreign concert acts throughout the years, I have been quietly looking out for OPM shows to watch as well, whether they be in big stages like the MOA Arena or an intimate one like a cafe.

I really liked the setting of Tim Pavino's Stages Sessions last night at The Coffee Bean cafe at the BGC.  I'm a regular diner in the restos in and around this building but for some reason, I had never entered this cafe branch before.

Anyhow, it provided a cozy ambiance for Tim to dish out his "Good Vibes" hit and a slew of hugot songs which the audience lapped up and applauded to.

Yun lang, I'm not really into hugot songs because I'm old already and people like us don't have time anymore to dwell on those emotions.

The only hugot song I liked was the Bonnie Raitt classic "I Can't Make You Love Me' which, surprisingly, they did in an upbeat jazzy arrangement.

He sang some real crowd pleasers as well like Forevermore and It Might Be You, which will certainly appeal to some of my friends and were crowd favorites last night.

Even then, I still enjoyed his show! I like his voice, I like the way he interprets songs, and I like the positivity that he carries as his raison d'etre.  The ones I liked were the Gary V. song Could You Be Messiah and Over and Over Again.

It was also a bonus that some of his contemporaries, Jason Dy and Morrissette Amon were there to support him.  They certainly made the show more exciting as well.

I am certainly looking forward to his new material and maybe a show to support the new material. I find great pleasure in seeing artists do their new stuff and talking about it.  It shows how they have evolved as artists.

Meeting Tim Pavino, Jason Dy, Morrissette Amon Up Close

Thanks to Jennifer Sy and her clients, I was introduced to Timmy Pavino and Jason Dy during one of the elimination round live shows of The Voice at the Resorts World.

As for Morrissette Amon, I think I first saw her in Martin Nievera's show at Solaire last year, thanks naman to Mayetz Alinsod.

They are some of the new and exciting new talents in today's OPM landscape. Thanks to social media, it is now much easier to know where they are going to perform and listen to the kind of music that they do.

Morrissette told me that her Dad named her after Alanis. Not surprised there dear. Alanis was one of THE voices of the 90s generation. Many people could certainly relate to her music.

Pity, I wasn't able to bring Jason and Tim's CDs with me. I have transferred them to my mp3 player but I couldn't find them in my stash! Wala tuloy me autograph.

Anyhow, it's such a relief that both guys did original songs in their albums instead of just doing covers. I usually distance myself from singers who just do covers in their albums

It was great fun to meet all of them last night since the venue was cozy and allowed people to mingle easily.

Local band Franco is on a roll this year, after I gave their album a spin, they now get their 3rd #1 song in my OPM countdown as A Beautiful Diversion rises to #1. #1 Franco - A Beautiful Diversion (#2)

#2 Lyca Gairanod - Puede Nang Mangarap (#3)

So happy for Jason Dy

I was lucky to see The Voice semifinals last week and I didn't realize that the show would wrap up that quickly!  However, it was great to see Jason Dy win the title since he was not only goodlooking, he also has a great chance of really making a career of it since he has, well, The Voice!  Buti na lang din that he was near my side of the stage so I had several pictures of him.
