A Christmas Song Tops My OPM Countdown This Christmas Week

It is not unusual for a Christmas song to top My OPM Top 10 countdown and it has happened several times over the course of the four decades of my countdown.

In 1986, Gary Valenciano topped my OPM countdown with the classic, "Pasko Na Sinta Ko", and the year after the diva Kuh Ledesma, put "Nakaraang Pasko" at #1.

Then in 1990, Jose Mari Chan released the classic Christmas i nour Hearts album, which placed two songs at #1, the title track of the album and "A Wish for Christmas Night"

Then in 1993, Ariel Rivera's "Sana Ngayong Pasko" went to #1.

Then in 2014, Joey Albert's "Kumukutikutitap"became the last Christmas song to top my countdown.

Till this week, when ABS-CBN released their Christmas station ID, a pretty catchy Christmas tune, sung by 38 of their talents.  It tops My OPM Top 10 countdown this week.

My #6 to #10 Favorite OPM Songs of 2012 (As of June 30, 2012) @theitchyworms #opm #10FavouriteBands @tanyamarkova @ginilingfest @anakarylle #popsfernandez

The first six months of 2012 has come and it's time once again to list down my ten favorite OPM songs of the year (as of June 30, 2012).
This is the second of two parts, this one detailing my #6 to #10 favorite OPM songs, as yet, of 2012.

I have to advise you though that this is a running list and the song's position may change as 2012 progresses because new entries can come in.  Everything is subjective, really, and is just based on how much I really like (or liked) the song.\

#6 Itchyworms - Awitin Para Sa Mga Nagmumuni-muni

I am not really sure what year the band Itchyworms released this song but since I 'discovered' it only this year, when I listened to the CD where this song was, I count it as a personal hit for me this year.  It's also probably one of the most creative and inventive songs any OPM act has done!  Truly hilarious!

#7 Tanya Markova - Da Facebook Song

No surprise really to find yet another Tanya Markova song in this year's top 10 list.  The band has been producing a lot of wonderful music these past two years and their latest Da Facebook Song is both cheeky and current!

#8 Giniling Festival - Hipon
I actually didn't know that the significance of hipon among the straight crowd is the same as that of the gay crowd.  But if you listen closely to what the band is singing, that observation becomes apparent!  I'm glad I discovered this band last month!  Another one of those inventive, quirky and definitely creative local bands we have in the local music scene right now!

#9 Karylle - Basically

It's a pity that Karylle's management has not given her the chance to do a live show.  I think she's ready now and I'm sure she has enough fans out here who would want to see her - maybe Teatrino or the Music Museum are worthy venues.  It's just that her latest album has already spawned several hits and by doing a series of live shows, she can promote it more and give those songs a live dimension!

Her ballad Basically ranks high in my favorite OPM songs of 2012!

Ok, I admit it might be that I'm an 80s child but I really recommend to you Pops Fernandez's Silver album.  It's quite a gem, filled with beautiful pop songs - so much so that three of those songs are in my OPM top 40 for 2012 - and two of them are in my top 10 - the second one being this one, By Heart.

Tanya Markova Gets Their Fourth #1 Song in My Personal Countdown

Tanya Markova gets their fourth #1 song in my personal weekly countdown.  Picture Picture, Disney and Linda Blair were all previous #1 songs.  This week, Da Facebook Song climbs from #8 to the pole position.

Here are my ten favorite songs for the week ending June 1, 2012

#1 Tanya Markova - Da Facebook Song (#8)

#2 Chris Cantada - Scarred (#9)

Chris Cantada also rises up from #9 to #2 this week with Scarred.  It's his first top 10 hit in my personal countdown.

#3 Never The Strangers - Alive (NEW)

Because they were the opening act in last week's Lifehouse concert, Never the Strangers get two top 10 songs this week with Alive debuting at #3 and Moving Closer at #4.

#4 Never The Strangers - Moving Closer (NEW)

#5 Madonna - I Fucked Up (#7)

Madonna moves up again, this time to #5 with I Fucked Up.

#6 Lady Gaga - Bad Kids (#2)

Lady Gaga's Bad Kids slips to #6 this week mainly due to the influx of songs from concert artists, Never the Strangers.

#7 Lifehouse - Wash (NEW)

Lifehouse returns with four songs in my top 10 list this week mainly due to their concert here last Saturday.  Wash is my most favorite performance of their that night.

#8 Lifehouse - Broken (NEW)

#9 Lifehouse - Storm (RE)

A former #1 song, Storm reenters this week at #9.  Pity that the band only played a snippet of the song, tsk tsk....

#10 Lifehouse - First Time (RE)

A former top 10 song, First Time reenters at #10.

Tanya Markova and Solenn

In a clever song, which is not unusual anymore from Tanya Markova, the band's latest song, Da Facebook Song, tackles one of the common problems of Facebook EBs (eye balls).  You can easily guess it if you listen to the song.  Figure out too how the beautiful  Solenn Heusaff gets into the equation!

My Favorite OPM Songs of 2011: #29 Tanya Markova - Linda Blair

Tanya Markova was one of the OPM breakthrough acts of 2010, and they continue that with their third release from their self-titled debut album, Linda Blair, which comes in at #28 in my personal year-end list. This song typifies the quirkiness of the group and of their humor which permeates into the song.

Hanging Out With Eevee, Ajka, Letter Day Story and Tanya Markova

I have finally fulfilled one of my New Year's resolution, which is to watch local acts live! Earlier this year, I couldn't make it to Juris and XLR8's shows since I had made previous commitments those nights - so finally, last night, I was free. So, I decided to hie off to Sazi's Bar in Spain and find out for myself if these bands that I like can actually play well - live!

Well, no surprise there. Eevee, Ajka, Letter Day Story and a host of other new bands like Kilos and Kaligta whose music I still have to familiarize myself with, all sounded solid and played with so much energy! It actually felt great being surrounded with these very talented musicians and singers who knew exactly how they want to sound and could clearly articulate through song what they wanted to say! I was also quite lucky to get to talk to them and engage them in smart banter, especially Angel del Pilar of Tanya Markova who had interesting views to share on lyric writing and K-Pop. All this while having a drink (I haven't drank Red Horse in ages, but Kicks of Tanya Markova offered me one, so how can I refuse! It did taste great - on the rocks, of course!)

To those who have lived under a rock, I am proud to say that today's OPM has not degenerated into Piolo Pascual, Jericho Rosales and Sarah Geronimo doing tired and bland renditions of hit ballads I grew up with. Well, they can bring in the crowds during their concerts and produce remade hits but they're obviously mass produced talent backed up by a huge studio. Big yawn!! If that's the only OPM you listen to then get a life and use Youtube to check out the music of Eevee, Ajka, Letter Day Story and many other great local acts (Pupil, Champ Lui Pio, Sandwich, Spongecola, among others). And that's only the rock genre. We also produce good OPM pop and R&B music too! But that's another article.

Eevee already has three hits so you can check out 'Gusto Ko Lang ng Girlfriend', 'Waiter' and their current hit, 'Larawan'. I was lucky to meet the band last night - Enzo, Craig, Jerrick and Paulo and got them to sign on their CD! Thanks guys! If you listen to their CD, it's like getting to know Enzo's love travails, he being their lead singer. It's actually quite a fresh and personal take on someone who's looking for love. At my age, I've already forgotten how humorous it was to look for love. They even have this song which is like a party ode to Davao! I wish someone would write something about Cebu, that way.

Among the three, I discovered Letter Day Story first, thanks to Sama-Sama. They also have two other hits Sulong and Paano, but it's their collaborations with Yeng Constantino (Kung Maibabalik) and Jaq Dionisio of Kiss Jane (Isang Umaga) which I actually like a lot. I'm not sure if the versions are in Youtube but you can always get their CD to hear it. Live, they play with so much energy they don't hesitate to jump from time to time when the song warrants it.

I discovered Ajka a few weeks ago through their song Tanong Lang, but what I can say is that their EP has more gems in it which in my opinion, actually sounds better to me than their carrier single. Sometimes it's a mystery to me as to how record companies choose which song to release, because in Ajka's case, Ako Naman and Denial would've attracted more of my age group - the group who actually buys CDs! It's a pity though that they only have an EP since I'm sure the band has so much to offer in new material, considering how solid the five songs in their EP is. I actually told Angel that they sound like a rockin' Swing Out Sister - a well-loved band among my peers.

Well, it's back to the foreign acts after last night with Kenny Loggins and Maroon 5 doing their shows in a week's time. As for the local acts, I only know of Miguel Escueta and XLR8 who have scheduled shows - or maybe, I'd have to do more research to find out who's singing where.
