An Embarrassment of Riches in The Voice Kids

The director of the Bourne Legacy once said that the talent here in the Philippines was "an embarrasment of riches". Obviously, he referred to the acting pool in our country.

We can safely say that it also applies to the overabundance of singing talent in this country.

Thanks to Ma'm Ligaya Salonga and Jennifer Sy, I was lucky again to see the latest incarnation of The Voice series here in the Philippines! This time, the contestants were kids!! Last night, I watched six very talented kids vie for four slots in the final round of the competition. Sa totoo lang, ang hirap pumili kung sinong i-eliminate.

Jennifer Sy and I were discussing it after dinner and I candidly told her who I wanted to stay in the competition, and we realized, walang matitira sa Team Lea!!

If I were a judge kasi, just basing from last night's performance, I would pick Edray as my first pick, because she really has 'the voice'! Then Juan Karlos as second pick because he's guapo and malakas ang stage presence, then Darren as a very close third pick. This kid performs like Bruno Mars! He can sing and he can move and he can belt as well!

My fourth pick and sentimental choice is Lyca who was so earnest and sweet and so innocent in her responses to the questions. The funny thing is, among the performances last night, it was hers that I was almost choked to tears! She had that 'paawa' effect kasi and she did a great version of Sharon Cuneta's song

My Ten Favorite OPM Songs of 2013 (#'s 10-6)

My ten favorite OPM songs for 2013 -

#10 Zsa Zsa Padilla - Palagi

I've always been a fan of hers since the 80's and it was great to know that she released an album of new material this year.  I promptly bought the CD and this song was the one that stood out for me.  I don't know if they released it already to radio, but I don't really care.  I just pick songs that I like and if the rest of the world likes it soon enough, then great for her!  This song is vintage Zsa Zsa in terms of arrangement and the way she sings it.

#9 Emmanuelle - Dear Diary

This girl has an EP which I bought in 2012 and I left out this song from last year deciding to include it in my OPM countdown this year - and it has stuck with me till the end of the year.  I think the one who manages her also manages Markki Stroem (I could be wrong) but it's a pity that she hasn't really broken in the mainstream.  She has strong songwriting skills which kinda reminds me of Taylor Swift during her early years.

#8  Sarah Geronimo - Ikot Ikot

I am not quite familiar as to how Sarah Geronimo evolved as an artist but this song is perfect for her and I think she matures a lot here, shedding of that pacute image that has always turned me off.  If she continues to make music this way, then I might, just might, buy her CD.  I am actually curious to hear what other material she is capable of producing.

#7  Franco - Better Days

It's a pity I missed the concert of this band last April.  I think it was too near the Easter holidays and I had some commitments.  This is one of the best OPM songs this year, in terms of arrangement and originality!  This song can definitely be marketed worldwide and I won't be surprised if somebody out there in the wide English speaking world picks it up!

#6 Ebe Dancel and the Cast of Sa Wakas - Bawat Daan

Another beautiful OPM song this year and this time, it comes from a musical, Sa Wakas, on the songs of Ebe Dancel and Sugarfree.  It's a beautifully written ballad and the way Ebe and the cast sings it is just amazing!  Too bad I missed seeing the musical, to think the PETA Theatre is just five minutes from our house!

OPM Female Power: Sarah, Yeng, Sitti, Zia

Yeng Constantino

Sarah Geronimo

Sitti

Zia Quizon

OPM music this week has its fair share of chanteuses led by pop princess, Sarah Geronimo.  Bakit Pa Ba is a decent song but I haven't quite taken a liking to it, compared to her previous hit, Kung Siya Ang Mahal.  Singer-songwriter Yeng Constantino continues to churn out hit after hit, this time, coming out with Pag-Ibig, which proved to be a hit during last month's Valentine's season.

I love Sitti's new song, Sinong Mag-aakala, which becomes the first Sitti song to make it to My Personal Top 10.  I also love Zia Quizon's follow-up to her first big hit, Ako Na Lang, Dear Lonely.  With her very perceptive and personal lyrics, Zia should have a great career ahead of her!

My Favorite OPM Songs of 2011: #20 Sarah Geronimo - Kung Siya Ang Mahal

I admit I don't really Sarah Geronimo that much, but this song of hers, Kung Siya Ang Mahal, was one of my favorite songs this year. She sings it so well, sans the usual histrionics, and just uses her voice beautifully to express the sentiments of the song.

Sarah Geronimo Channels Karen Carpenter

My Filipino teacher in Grade 4 was a huge Carpenters fan.  She would often strum her guitar and sing Karen Carpenter's songs before classes started.  I don't know how she would react though to Sarah Geronimo's pop-ified version of that Carpenters' classic.

Anyhow, all eyes are on Sarah nowadays, as everyone is hoping she'd make it three hits in a row for Star Cinema and Viva Films for the movie with the same title as that Carpenters' classic.  I did ask a friend if he thinks that Sarah-Gerald movie would be a hit, despite the presence of Edward and Bella and the adorable penguins, and he said yes, pronto, sans hesitation!  I guess Sarah has enough fans to fill all the cinemas!  Good luck to her and to Star Cinema and Viva Films then!

Finally A Sarah Geronimo Song That I Like - Kung Siya Ang Iyong Mahal

It has taken me awhile to warm up to Sarah Geronimo, the self-proclaimed Pop Princess of Philippine music basically because I haven't found any of her songs interesting. She did release a very good song last year, Sino Nga Ba Siya, which almost touched base with me, but finally this year, this song has been part of my personal favorites list for OPM songs!

Interestingly, her live version here mimics perfectly the recorded version! No wonder people love her! No tweaking of her voice, no Autotune, just pure talent!

Why Piolo Pascual, Christian Bautista and Sarah Geronimo Should Just Become Hotel Lounge Singers

They have a huge TV station backing them up. They have talent and they have stage presence. But as singers, they are very lazy. Or maybe their management is. It's irritating that with what they are capable of doing, what they just opt to do is do covers of songs which were already fine in the first place! And the worst part is they make good money from it! But does it do anything to forward the cause of OPM. I don't think so. No wonder the kids today would rather listen to Korean bubblegum pop music! Who wants to listen to a rehash of 'Terminal' or 'I Remember The Girl' or 'Love Will Keep Us Together'? The 'oldies' who are managing their careers! I bet their concerts are snoozefests! Better to just watch a hotel lounge singer do those songs. At least they're not lazy!
